Caramel - Mt. Carmel Caramel

Back Label:
Mount Carmel is a well-known mountain ridge in Palestine, usually called in the Hebrew Bible Hakkarmel, "the garden" or "the garden-land." In ancient Canaanite culture, high places were considered to be sacred, and Mount Carmel was no exception:

  • In the Book of Kings, Elijah challenges 450 prophets of a particular Baal to a contest at the altar on Mount Carmel to determine whose deity was genuinely in control of the Kingdom of Israel.
  • Around 1190, a community of hermits formed on Mount Carmel. These men, who had gone to Palestine from Europe either as pilgrims or as crusaders, chose Mount Carmel in part because it was the traditional home of Elijah.
  • On July 16th, 1251, the Virgin Mary appeared to St. Simon Stock and gave him the Brown Scapular. She then said, “Receive, my beloved son, this habit of your order. This shall be to you and to all Carmelites a privilege, that whosoever dies clothed in this shall never suffer eternal fire.”
